Westhampton Beach

Westhampton Beach

Westhampton Beach hosts a popular farmers market throughout the summer with many local vendors, and an annual St. Patrick's Day parade. The Main Street was recently redesigned, resulting in pedestrian-friendly streets, buried electric lines and the opening of new shops and restaurants along with longtime favorites. The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center presents world class performances of music, dance, comedy and cinema, as well as arts education programs, classes, camps and lessons, and other events. Visitors to the village can take a "tree walk" to see trees planted in the village each year, in celebration of Arbor Day; the village is recognized as a Tree City USA community. Historic homes remain in the village, along with new ones, both along the beach and in town.

The newest village in the Westhampton area, West Hampton Dunes, was incorporated in 1993, after the Halloween Nor'easter of 1991 and another nor'easter in 1992 caused major damage to homes along the ocean and bay sides of the barrier beach, breached the barrier island, and devastated the beach, leaving the homes still remaining unprotected from further storms. After the village was incorporated a successful legal action by residents enabled the beach to be restored. In the village, which extends about 2 miles from Cupsogue County Park on the eastern side of Moriches Inlet, along Dune Road on both the ocean and bay sides, a successful beach and dune restoration project has improved public access, enrichment of endangered habitats and provided vital coastal flood and erosion protection.
